Paul Ehrenberg (German, 1876–1949)
This beautiful Dachau, Germany impressionistic landscape oil on canvas by Paul Ehrenbemrg measures 18" x 26" or in the painted wood frame dimensions of 23" x 31", is titled "mohr bei dachaur" ("More at Dachau") and signed twice verso P. Ehrenberg, as well as signed and dated lower left front, P. Ehrenberg 1904.
Biography:
Paul Ehrenberg was a German violinist and impressionist painter. He was a student of the painter Heinrich von Zügel and a member of the Luitpoldsgruppe and Künstlergenossenschaft (Artist Cooporatives). His portraits, still lifes and landscape paintings were exhibited throughout Munich. He married the painter Lilly Teufel.
Ehrenberg was an excellent violinist, who often played chamber music with Thomas Mann. Based on the evidence of Thomas Mann's letters and diaries, Mann was infatuated with Ehrenberg, and they had an intense personal relationship from 1899 to about 1903. Mann based several characters in his published writings on Ehrenberg.
