Pauline Stone Polk - (American, 1896-1986)

This large still life watercolor on paper measures 36” x 24” and is a great representation of Pauline Polks transparent watercolor wet-into-wet technique.  Signed by the artist and dated 1959 lower right,  this beautiful watercolor is in good condition with vibrant colors and is a quintessential example of the artist's work.

Born in New York City on June 27, 1896, Pauline Stone grew up on the East Coast and married about 1917.  In 1932, after returning from her travels to Europe, she began spending summers in southern California where she eventually bought a house there in 1937.

For several years she worked on mosaics for Millard Sheets at his Claremont studio. She became vice president of the Los Angeles Municipal Art Commission and was very active in the local art scene.

Working in a large format, she used transparent watercolors with a wet-into-wet technique. She is best known for her floral still lives.

Pauline Stone Polk died in Pomona, CA on Feb. 25, 1986.
